First Burn & Candle Care

Allow a full melt pool on the first burn. Do not trim wick before your first time burning your candle.  Coconut soy wax has a memory so the first burn is important. On your very first burn, let the candle burn long enough for the melt pool to reach within 1/4" of the edges of the jar — this typically takes 2–3 hours. There may be an 1/8" wax left unmelted at outer edges in the first several burn sessions.  (Do not worry, the melt pool will be full once the wax reaches midway point half way down the jar in later burns.)  Extinguishing too early can cause the wax to tunnel on future burns, which shortens the overall burn time; first burn session, plan for 2 to 3 hours.

Trim your wick before every burn. The braided cotton wick performs best when trimmed to about ¼ inch before lighting. A trimmed wick keeps the flame calm, reduces soot, and helps protect your jar and your scent throw. If the wick has a mushroom-shaped tip after burning, simply snap it off once the wax is fully cooled and hardened.

Scent throw and curing. Freshly poured candles benefit from a short curing period — if yours was poured very recently, the scent throw may deepen after a week or two of rest. Cold throw (the scent in an unlit candle) is naturally subtler in coconut soy; the warm throw when burning is where this wax really shines.

About surface frosting or tiny oil droplets. A light white coating (frosting) or small oil beads on top of the wax are completely normal characteristics of natural coconut soy wax — they are not a defect and do not affect burn performance or scent. These are signs you have an all-natural wax, not a synthetic blend.

Sooting or a flickering flame? If you notice a larger-than-normal flame or light soot on the jar, extinguish the candle, let it cool completely, and trim the wick. Drafts from fans, vents, or open windows are the most common cause of flickering and uneven burns — burn in a still spot for best results.

When to reach out. If your wick is off-center, the jar arrives cracked, or you have any concerns about your candle, please contact me before burning. I stand behind every candle that leaves my studio and want you to have the best experience possible.

Stop burning when1/4 inch of wax remains in the jar to protect the glass and the surface it sits on. Then clean out the jar and put it to work — it's canning quality and ready for your next use!
